Death to false vinyl...

One of the many good things about moving to NYC is that I can report on all the happenings first hand, and so this morning I took a trip to Houston and Lafayette to watch the death to false vinyl rally unfold.

If you aren't aware of the war that has been raging upon Taco Bell, where have you been??? (see post). Their BellHedz toys have caused a storm amongst the toy community. Not because, god forbid, Taco Bell have made a vinyl toy (I mean who hasn't??), but because they chose some second rate designer (and I have read all the positive comments about what a great designer the guy behind the figure is... but if he was that good he wouldn't sell his soul and plagiarise a design so blatantly, even if it is what the client wants, just say good bye to your design reputation) to steal a well known and loved design and stick on a new head shape. You can't call a design a homage or a reference if you steal 99% of the original design ( the body, the packaging, typefaces and actual designs on the figures), its just a blatant rip off, lets face it!

In response to these figures making out of a dark hole, Kidrobot organised a death to false vinyl rally, giving away over a thousand dunny, and t-shirts to supporters of the cause.

Taco Bell (in the end) decided not to release the BellHedz toys from the Bellbus, I'm guessing because of KR's weight upon them, and instead enrolled some Marvel web guy and gave out free taco's. Still they got the press, good or bad, its all promotion, and I'm sure this one's not dead yet.

Unfortunately the power of the Taco's were too much for some, and defectors were seen!!

Hurrah, really pleased to hear that they are not being released. What the rip-off, can't really call them artists, Mikko and Tom (or Anonymous as they like to go by in the other post) did was unforgivable. Kidrobot offers artists like MAD and Kathie Olivas (whose work was so horribly ripped) a niche audience who truly love their work and talent - something which the aforementioned thieves will be unaccustomed with. Death to Plagiarism.

In Brazil we also have cases like this:

* Andrew Bell, O-No Sushi Plagiarism: http://www.ladypulga.blogspot.com

* Monskeya Plagiarism: http://www.estudiomize.com.br

Great post Clutter, I was amazed when I first saw the Taco Bell ripped off KR vinyl toy. Hopefully other companies will learn from their mistake.

oh they're released alright, they just weren't handing them out at that day. you can get them at Taco Bell's everywhere. Some even showed up at a Dunny trading party as a gag a few days ago :)

THANKS TO ALL THE PEOPLE WHO BOUGHT THE BELLHEDZ.
when i got that project i thought it would be a pretty funny tribute to the dunny’s which i’ve been collecting for a very long time. and i’ve also been a fan of kidrobot. i always say meet them guys at SD comiccon.

so thanks to all the peeps who like my design- (but i only designed the graphics- and i’m very very proud of it)

I see the expensive college degree you have wasn't wasted, as you don't know the difference between something which you create - bring into existence; originate and something which you steal - take (another’s property) illegally or without right or permission.

So stop calling them your designs Yo!G-Money!Deep!Dip$hit! whichever pseudonym (go look it up) you want to go by.
