Dilemma..

So my latest love of Rock Posters has already posed an interesting Dilemma. Art vs Band. Now thinking about this, my instant reaction would be art of course. If the poster is amazing it doesn't matter about the band, but the more i think about it, and look around, the more apparent it becomes that it does matter.

Now if the poster is for a band you haven't heard of, then maybe you can go in and buy blind. Hoping that if you ever do hear this band they will blow your mind (just like the poster). But what if they are awful and then become big, and your beloved poster is moved to the bathroom just so that it is in a less prominent place when you get visited by the cool kids. Or do you just think fuck it.. this poster is amazing i love the art work, the band is irrelevant.

I am not sure i have an answer to this one. I know that if i really really hate the band, then i don't think i could bring myself to buy the poster, but having said that, maybe i would. Its something i need to think on further.

Anyway the thing that sparked this dilemma is the poster at the top of this. Its by an ultra talented UK artist called Drew Millward (Cov born and Leeds based) who's work is blowing my mind! I love the said poster, but am far from a fan of Hard Fi, so would i want it in my collection?? Probably not, even though i think that the design is awesome!! What I do know is that i definately want something of his in my collection, thats for sure.

I think we will be seeing much more of Drew's work (probably on here ;) . Please go check him out at drewmillward.com
Love this Gallows one, can def see a Koa influence in there!

So tough....i was also tempted by a silkscreened poster at RGG...but it was for a rubbish band so I left. That Drew piece rules, but I seriously couldn't have a Hard Fi poster on the wall!

Bunnies = YAY!! <3
Hard FI... nooooooooooooooooooooo

I'm not sure that the cuteness could justify having Hard Fi on the wall either..

On the wall...in the stereo...on the iPod...existing at all in fact!

Photoshop Hard Fi off there and have it as desktop wallpaper. That's the only possible solution. So are Band posters becoming big in the UK too? I thought it was a US phenomenon....

Ey up folks!
Well, to start with, this is a pretty old poster. To be honest i'm not even sure that i had heard Hard Fi at the time of doing this.... and certainly not at the time of agreeing to do the poster.
I'm not a fan of the band (although i'm sure they are all thoroughly decent chaps), and since doing this i have turned down many poster jobs due to feeling a little hypocritical making a poster for a band i dislike.
Thanks for the kind words on the work though.... most appreciated.

Hey Drew

Thanks for your comments. It seems to me that you start off looking out for posters of bands you like, and then discover artists and move on to searching for those artists. Which is where i guess the Dilemma hits in. It’s a tough one for sure, and i can understand the internal fight you must have when you get asked to do a poster, which must be even trickier than just choosing which ones to buy.

Do you have a web store?
Cheers
Maz

Web store?! Chance would be a fine thing!
Unfortunately my website is in a perpetual state of 'construction'. Since i have neither the skills or software to build one myself, i'm a in the tricky situation of relying on other people to help out. Best bet is to have a gander over at www.myspace.com/drewmillward and just get in touch.
I've got a number of other posters in the pipeline at the moment, but i'm being kept busy with other things, so i'm trying to juggle everything.

personally I think the band is very important in a poster. At my local record store they have a pile of old poster that are up for grabs and I will dig through them every week. I might take a poster with interesting design for my scrap book but I'm not hanging a band in my place unless I'm 100% behind them.
